Katie Carline is the 2024 recipient of the Gill-Chin Lim Award for Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in Global Studies, which recognizes one graduate student each year for their outstanding MSU doctoral dissertation focusing on global studies, including its intellectual contributions and innovative methodology.
Carline is a historian of gender, religion, cities and consumer culture in South Africa. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at Dalhousie University funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Her current research and book manuscript investigate the history of Black women's church-based organizing in urban South Africa. This project uses oral histories and written records to examine how members of popular women's religious associations practiced their shared identities as "Christian public mothers" in ways that transformed the physical and cultural shapes of a segregated city. Her research engages with similar themes on a transnational scale as well, tracing African women's involvement in ecumenical religious organizations during the era of decolonization in Africa.
Carline also maintains an interest in digital methods for historical research and the history of digital technology. Her scholarship has been published in The Journal of African History, the Canadian Journal of African Studies and the Journal of Southern African Studies.
Carline was nominated by Peter Alegi, a professor in the Department of History. “Dr. Katie Carline is a brilliant emerging scholar, an enterprising researcher, a magnificent writer, and an ethical person with an impeccable work ethic,” said Alegi.
